Bhutan Unveils Sovereign TER Digital Gold on Solana

  • Bhutan has launched TER, a digital token that is fully backed by real gold from its national reserves. This is a big step toward combining old-fashioned value with new technology.
  • The fast and green Solana network is the foundation of TER, which will officially launch on December 17, 2025, through the new Gelephu Mindfulness City.

Bhutan, a peaceful Himalayan country that values happiness over money, is now making waves in the world of digital money. On December 10, 2025, it announced TER, a special token that is tied to real gold. This isn’t just any cryptocurrency; the government backs it with its own gold reserves, which makes it safe and stable. Just like you would with a piece of gold, you can send it anywhere in the world right away with your phone.

“TER” means “treasure” in the local Dzongkha language. Gelephu Mindfulness City, a new special zone in Bhutan that wants to bring in smart investments and tech ideas, puts it out there. This city is helping to make a future where money moves easily and safely by using blockchain.

“We picked Solana because it can handle thousands of trades per second and keeps costs low. It also doesn’t use a lot of energy, which is good because Bhutan loves nature”. Since 2019, the country has been mining Bitcoin using clean hydropower. It now has more than 5,984 Bitcoin, which is worth more than $536 million. TER builds on that by making gold digital without having to dig up more resources.
During the first rollout, people can buy TER directly from DK Bank, which is Bhutan’s first digital bank and has been approved by the Royal Monetary Authority. This bank is responsible for keeping the gold and coins safe. They worked with Matrixdock, a tech company in Gelephu, to make sure the tokenization went smoothly.

With TER, people from all over the world can buy Bhutan’s gold without having to send heavy bars. Every token is linked to real gold that has been checked, so it’s like a digital key to real treasure. Officials say this creates a “bridge” between traditional savings and blockchain fun, which will help Bhutan grow beyond tourism and energy.

Bhutan has been to a crypto rodeo in the past. They’ve been looking into blockchain for years as a way to boost their economy while staying true to values like sustainability and mindfulness. TER could make it possible to tokenize other things, like silver or even cultural treasures, without harming the land.
